The story opens with a tremeodous situation in which a husband finds his wif9 in a compromising situation. He obtains a divorce, retaining custody of bis son, the mother keeping the daughter. Years pass and the husband beoomea rich, while the woman fails, and is a frequent visitor to the infamous gambling housa known aB “fxi& House of Mirrots,” The daughter being edncatei in a convent, does not know thin. On a vacation the girl visits the gambling house and there meets among the clients her own brother and a young man named Martindale. The brother falls in love with his sister and they are about to marry.
