MOUNT GREENLAND OPERATIONS.
The Company registered as ,l The Mount Greenland Gold Quartz Mining Company Limited ” is working the claim on Cedar Creek close to the Pe k (situated between the Mikonui and Totara Rivers) from which the Company takes its name, and quite lately the work which has been dona in the olaim has resulted in good returns. A syndicate secured the right of Borne of the groard in the latter part of 1912 and early in 1913 a sample quantity of quar‘z was taken from the outcrop on the claim and ueated in the Thames school of mines. The , result was favourable enough to war- i rant the opinion that a payable reef j might bo discovered. Members of the syndicate resolved to prosecate the work in the endeavor to ascertain if a gold bearing reef likely to prove payable really existed. Their efforts aft6r many months of steady work proved successful up to the point of demonstrating the fact - that a qaartz reef with apparently payable gjld in it was located and i assays made of quartz from various parts of the re6f tended to coulirm this. The Company was then formed in Wanganui (Registered Office 16 Wicksteed Place) and sufficient money made available to more vigorously prosecute tho work of prospecting. This work demonstrated ths existence of a long “ run ” of rich gold beamg quartz in a tunnel approximately 70 feet below the ontetop first referred to. Later farther prospecting was conducted in a lower level. The main r9ef after considerable work and a great deal of expense was dis-
covered in this iow level tunnel, the distance perpendicularly beiog 130 feet below the upper level tunnel. The next step was to pot in a riee from tbb low level to the upper level tunnel This was successfully accomplished. Ths rise came up either through or at the side of the gold bearing quariz for the whole distance of the upper level. The rise was “ holed ” through at the end of last year. In the meanwhile a small five stamp battery for testing the 1 quariz was erected. Crushing made by this Bmall battery demonstrates the exceeding richness of the claim and exploration work disclosed the existenoe of a large body of payable gold bearing quartz What is recorded for the period ending sth May, 1917, is as follows:—* The crushing of 168 tons 5 owt, yielding 284 czs 19 dwts, on whioh th 9 Bank have advanoed £l,lll 7/3. The tailings have not yet been treated.
