In the Supreme Court, the Chief ■Justice delivered the 'decision of the Court of Appeal in the application'by Jack Kalman to be admitted as a solicitor of the Court. __ Sir Robert Stout said there was no doubt that the application was one from a British subject, but the Government had added War Regulations which declared that naturalised British subjects', who were previously Germans, hereafter were to bo treated as alien enemies. This had happened to appellant’s father., The question to be considered was whether it had any effect 011 tlie application.. Tile decision of the members of the Court v.»s that lit had none. Applicant had become a British subject not by reason of his father’s naturalisation, but because be was born in New Zealand. If the Government wished to affect the status of persons in his position, in. must do so by expres legislation or by war regulation. As he was a British subject, he was not affected by the War Regulations. The Court was of opinion that sh should be admitted. llis Honour addressing the applicant, said that an affidavit had been filed which showed him to be exemplary character?. He wished him every success in liis profession.

The Oxford Murder. K Buller Found Guilty CHRISTCHURCH, May 18. The trial of Charles Butler for the murder of Henrietta Louisa Foster at Oxford on April Bth was concluded today after lasting three days, accused being found guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy owing to his low mentality. In passing sentence of death Judge Denniston said: “You have been, convicted after a trial in which every consideration has been given to you. With the verdict of the jury I thinjc’ i-t right, looking at the nature of the case and its responsibilities' upon the jury, to express my entire concurrence. I do not think it was possible for any other decision than that which the jury have come to, with a strong •recommendation to mercy owing to your low mentality. That recommendation will be forwarded to the proper authori- - ties.”
