PUBLIC WORKS REPORT The Chairman of the Publio Works Committee presented the following report : I beg to report that the Public Works Committee accompanied with the Overseer made an inspection of the various parts of the Borough "tn May 9tli and after due consideration w« recommend to the Council that the following works to authorised to be carried out during the year, viz:— A new "concrete kerbing to be put down in Sewell Street between Hamilton Street and Gibson’s Quay, the present wooden kerbing being in a very rotten state. The kerbing in front of tho Post Office also requires attention. Fitzlierbeit Street, —Between Weld Street iand Gibson’s Quay, also between Park and Tudor Streets. The water at present overflow's the footpaths from the water tubes. Seeing that there is practically very little fall in the waterliableis the only satisfactory solution of the difficulty will be to put concrete kerbing, in both these sections of Fitzherbert Street. The Overseer’s estimate for the laying of tlie whole of the kerbing, including the levelling up of the footpaths, gratings, etc., is £97. The Town Hall require® a very extensive overhaul, the building requires lifting and levelling, the inside of the main hall to be panelled with dressec timber in place of the present papering, and the building generally to receive a thorough overhaul. The estimated cost of this work is £IOO. The Sale Street drain also received f good deal of consideration, and aftei going over the ground and conferring with the Overseer, we decided to as! for authority from the Council to expend the sum of £SOO on this work. The scheme briefly outlined ia ar open drain from the river to Stafforc Street, three feet concrete pipes to b< put in at the various street crossings Owing to the depth of the drain bo tween Stafford and Hampden Street this portion will require to bo lai< down in 30in. concrete pipes. A Hampden Street’ the bottom level o the drain can be raised 3ft Gin am then carried on as an open drain cutt ing the creek at the inlet on the sur face. By this method it will be pos F.iiblo to reliovo the Bealey Street draii of part of the flood water without in terfering with the original scheme fo this work as it will always be possibl to bring the bottom level of the drai: at Hampden Street to the creek at th orginal level namely 3ft 6in below til surface level of the creek. In conclusion gentlemen, w© believ these are amongst the most urgen works required in the Borough, and w would therefore ask the Council t give the necessary authority for earn ing out the whole of the works*. —Raceived ; considered olause b clause and adopted as a whole, ABATTOIRS DEPORT The Chairman of the Abattoir Con ■ mittee reported as follows: [ I have the honour to'report that i a meeting of the Abattoir Committi held on the 16th Idem., to consider tl * financial 'position of the Abattoir, * w-’s decided after very careful conside . ailon to make the following recomme: datic's, viz.,— i fa) That Mr. W. It was pointed out that the abattoir had resulted in a lobs last year and it was necessary to reduce the expense*. The coarse proposed was considered the beßt one to pursue. Mr Jarman, who was present, stated that he thought bis Department would think that he had failed in his duty. The Chairman said it was simply a matter of finance.
