The chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board meeting yesterday, in the coarse of a discussion on salaries, mentioned that the levies for the year just ended, alcmg with the Government subsidy, amounted to £5230, and this year the amount required would be £7OOO, estimating the Government subsidy at 19/3, as against 20/3 last year. The redaction was on acojunt of the -decrease in population. If the salaries were tube increased, .said the chairmao, the amount of laviee, /would not exceed last year. At the beginning of Isc year the Board had a deficiency of £1250, but he was pleased to state that this bad been reduced by £IOOO, and ibis year's levy should be ample to carry on with. An unusual natural phenomenon for Auckland was noticeable in the sky about 12 o’clock on Friday night in a display of the Aurora Australis, the southern equivalent of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The display, corresponding with the description'of auroral rays, as distinct from auroral arcs at the period cover"e<| practically the whole southern sky. Broad bands of light, quite distinctly aefiuad, streamed across the sky, radiating from an arc some distance above the horizon. The greater portion of the display had faded by 12 30 a.m, but in the south-eastern sector of the sky, nearer the light of the moon, the rays persisted, showing more brightly than elsewhere. « -
The death occurred at Dunedin on Wednesday of Oap f ain Wiip am Blagdon. The deceased wits- known throughout the length aud of New Zealand as a fire brigade man had been a fa roi iar figure at every demonstration and conference held in the Dominion for years past. Before coming to New Zaa. land (over forty years ago) he was a member of the Plymouth Fire Brigade, when he held the position of call boy. no .vas a prominent figure in connection with the United Fire Brigadei Association of New Zealand and held, the twenty-five years’ service gold star.
