It is not generally known that an Act of Parliament passed in 1915) pro* vided for the detention of prisoners found to be suffering from venereal disease. The procedure is simple. The medical officer of the prison certifies that the prisoner is suffering from a contagious disease and the prisoner, prior to the expiration of his sentence, is brought before a magistrate in Chambers, when on proof being given as tu the nature of the disease, an order may be made for his detention in a prison hospital until certified as cured. The Act applies to prisoners of either sex. A few days ago a male prisoner, who was serving a Bhort term, was brought before Mr F. W, Fraser, Bs.\l. at Auckland and committed to Mount Eden prison, which has been gazetted a prison hospital, under the Act, until oared.
