LATE WAR NEWS.

Per Press i arsooiation.— Oopyssghi

May Day Riots. BERNE, May 4. The closing of the German frontiers is partially explained by the rerusai of independent leaders not to interrupt work on May Day. / The military authorities informed them on • April 25th. that they would be arrested for bigti treason and probably shot unless they gave the required pledge. The stalwarts collapsed and the pledge was given thereupon. The military on April 29th arrested 1000 of ithe unruliest local leaders at at IBerlin, Leipzig, Breslau, Magdeburg, Halle Dresden, Stcfctgarfc and Kiel where May Day strikes were threatened. The rank and file of the party thus were left leaderless amt found placards on Monday staring, them full in the face warning them that the full penalties of martial law would be enforced • against strikers. The whole movement collapsed and the independent socialists went to work on Tuesday.
