An old resident of Groymouth in the person of Mrs Moran, died at her residence Cowper Htre&t, yesterday morning, aged 70 years. Deceased was the relict of the la + e Patrick Moran and a native of Westmeath, Ireland. She leaves a family of boys and girls all of whom are grown up Mr Ed. McCormick and Mrs B. Heslan both of Rokatahi ate bro her and sister of the deceased lady. The burial is to take place on Friday in [he Stafford cemetery. Municipal elections are taking place to-day. At Hokitika there are contests for the Council, Charitable Aid Board, and Harbour Board, but very little interest is being shown in the polling. At Greymouth much more interest is being taken, for in addition to elections for the Council and Charitable Aid Board for which there are two decided tickets, there is a referendum being also taken on the question of Wednesday or Saturday for the weekly half holiday, and whether or not there shall be Sunday pictures, The death occurred at Eeefton Hospital early on Saturday morning of Mrs Fox, a resident of Black’s Point, who was. taken there on Tuesday last, suffering from self-inflicted wounds. The poor woman had not been in the best of health for some time past, and no doubt must have become deranged iu mind to attempt such a deed. She leaves two young girls and a brother resident in Eeefton. At the inquest held in the afternoon by Coroner Hutchison the following verdict was returned .—‘-The oause of death was syncope, due to exhauston from a wound in the throat, selfinflicted on the 17th April, 1917 at Black’s Point, while deceased was in a state of insanity, Mr Edgar M, Phi'lips, piano tuner and salesman representing Messrs Webley Sons and Goftou Ltd, is no w in Hokitika. The ladies of tlie Overseas Club will conduct a euchre tournament in the Club rooms on Thursday evening, commencing at 8 o’clock. All invited. Participants one shilling,—Advt. The Greymouth Jockey Club struck a heap of- trouble with its autumn meeting, which opened yesterday. The development of the s'rike caused the loss of train?, the Sa'lvray Department tearing up its “ scrap cf paper ’’ without any regard for what was a fair and honourable cou r se with the Club. The Club even went the length o! offering to provide the necessary fuel, but the Department was so bent in wr?ak ; ng its wrath, that although the Acting Premier and Minister for Mines favored a concession, the power’ that be in Wellington vetoed the very fair proposition from the Grey Club. Shades cf Richard Seddon —surely all a-e hack to the bad ola days of Government by under secretaries. On top of all this the weather was most unkind, things already bad much worse. Had the day been fine, the Club, thanks to the generous assistance from the owners, would have had a fair day. The field* were good, the starting excellent, and the racing interestsg. It is to be hoped that the Club will be better favored with the weather to morrow, the concluding day of the meeting.

A London correspondent. writes on Feb 13th : Private P. Chevassus (Hokitika) is in London on a fortnight’s leave from the Command Depot at Codford. He" has been declared unfit for further service, and expects to return to the Dominion shortly. The Argus regrets to record the death of 9 very old and respected resident of the district, in the person of Mrs J. Stanley, who passed away last evening at the advanced age of 87 years. The deceased lady, who was a native.of Chester, England was well and favorably known to a large circle of friends on the West Coast, who will be sorry to learn of her death, which removes from our midst another of the fast diminishing number of Graymouth’sSold identities. Tbe annua! meeting of the Parishioners of All Saint’s Church to-mor-row evening will be of more than ordinary importance and interest as the Dircetan authorities have requested tbat tbe distiict be brought into line with other parochial districts aud be governed by d district vestry, assisted by local committees. Tbe meeting tomorrow night will therefore, after receiving the accounts for the past year, elect a comifuttee who will manage the purely local elf lira and finances of the parish, aod also elect delegates to tbe district vesiry, who will in turn eleot a people’s warden for the whole district. This procedure will also be followed by the five country churches which till now have each had a vestry and warden. A short musical programme and refreshments will conclude the meeting, which iu view of the nature of the bueiuas&to be transacted, it is hoped that aH parishioners and especially the registered Church members will attend.
