Sir Douglas Haig {reports:—We gained ground at night time on the left bank of the 'Scarpe eastward of Fampaux.

We captured this morning a further portion of the front lino system southeast of Loos.

LONDON, April 19. A French communique reports: South of St. Quentin after the liveliest bombardment the Germans attacked east of Monchy. The first attempt was stopped dead by our fire, but the second which was more violent resulted in fractions of the enemy penetrating our advanced trenches, but these were all killed or captured by an immediate counter attack and our line wan completely restored. Wo vigorously continued the offensive at various points between Soison's rfna Auberive. Despite the persistent bad weather the operations on the west- attacicuig front were brilliantly successful. North of Chavonne we captured the village of Ostel and drove back the enemy a kilometre northwards. Wo captured Bray ecu Laonnoise and all the ground eastward to the vicinity of Courteeon. Under the vigorous pressure of our infantry and the murderous fife o.i our artillery the enemy fled in disorder, abandoning much material aind depots of food.
