Counsel qu ted authorities as to the varying interpretations of “ residence during war. / The case was adjourned and submitted for opinion of the Solicitor* General, as suggested. Major Conlau mentioned that there were many shearers and oihers in Australia nut wishing to reside for any lengthy term bictuse of the doubtfulness of the Act as to what period of residence constituted liability for serv:oe.

An Ashburton Resolution

Asuruuton April 20

At a special meeting of Ashburton County Council to-day, it was unanimously resolved thet the Council views with great disapproval the action of the mioera in their endeavor to hamper Government at this oritical time of the war, and will support Government in any stops they may deem necessary to take in restoring.
