Appeal Board Question.
Auckland, April 18 Before the Fist Military Appeal Board, W i.'iam V. R.biuaoo, a wool buyer, appealed, R 3 he \vu« not- a New Zealand reservist,. Mr Wtc mibe, for appellant said ‘hat, appellant came hers iu Novimber, 1915, and had been specially detained in count cion with wool commandeered, aud was paid by tho Imperial Government. Me pi’ Conlati said the Act was vacuo as to what constituted u leserv\9t in the,interpretation of “ resident ” in view of the far-reaching remits, poßeibly affecting seamen and shearers. In the pre-eat case the facts were clear, but appellant had a further obligation, as he was liable for home service. Appellant had left Eogiand twice sinoe the war, and was willing to fight, but desired to go home where his people
lived. Major Conlan drew attention to the Ddfence Act regulation that a res daoce of nix months by persons under thirty years of age made them liable for mili'ary training. Counsel qu ted authorities as to the varying interpretations of “ residence during war. / The case was adjourned and submitted for opinion of the Solicitor* General, as suggested. Major Conlau mentioned that there were many shearers and oihers in Australia nut wishing to reside for any lengthy term bictuse of the doubtfulness of the Act as to what period of residence constituted liability for serv:oe.
An Ashburton Resolution
Asuruuton April 20
At a special meeting of Ashburton County Council to-day, it was unanimously resolved thet the Council views with great disapproval the action of the mioera in their endeavor to hamper Government at this oritical time of the war, and will support Government in any stops they may deem necessary to take in restoring.
