Thomas James Campbell, who in the Lower Court pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery, came up for sentence before Mr Justice Sim to-day. Counsel said accused served in tbe Boer War, and at the outbreak of the present war he had twice volunteered, but had been rejected on account of lung trouble. Finally be was accepted as assistant butcher on a transport, where he contracted cerebro-spinal meningitis. Tbe present offences were committed under the influence of drink. Prosecuting counsel said that the police described the accused as a plausible criminal. He was waiting to be tried on charges of false pretences in Cbristohureh, Timaru and papier. The Judge said that the offences were mean and contemptible, and he sentenced aconsed to twelve months’ impiisocment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative.
