For the sixteen seats on the City Council there arejfckiriy nominations, including one lady. Mr J. Brown was re-elected Mayor of Riccaiton. Suicides of Soldiers. Christchurch, April 16 Sir James Allen, under date 14th iust, writes as follows to the secretary of a Christchurch union : “In reply to vonr letter of 31st March, I have had enquiries made in regard to suicides of soldiers and have had ths kquest proceedings searched with a view to' ascertaining the cause. Out of nine ruieides which have occurred, two appear to have been due to alcoholism ; one case followed on an epileptic fit; one was due to private worry ; and one to mental derangement. In the four remaining cases there was nothing in evidence to indicate the reason for act.” Diphtheria and MeningitisWellington, April 16 Surgeon-General Henderson stated that throe oases of. diphtheria have been discovered &mODg the‘2Bth Reinforcements at Trentham. One came from Auckland one from Wellington, and one from Dunedin. All are progressing favorably. A case of meningitis has developed at Tauhareuikau —an Otago man—but the case is not developed uud the soldier is progressing favorably. Customs ReturnsChristchurch April 16 Hon A. M. Myers stated to-day that it gave him groat satisfaction to an- ■ nounoe a record collection through the Customs, and he said that iu view of the curtailment of shipping and tonnage, investigations were being made by the departmental officers to show in wbat directions, if any, importations could be restricted.
