THE GERMANS FOILED
In Ambitious Programme wi Paris, April 16 The Petit Parisien states that four German divisions participated in the counter attacks at the Bapaume-Cam-brai Road, attempting to recapture important points. It was tbe most ambitious programme undertaken for months. Hitherto they merely attempted io stop tho Allied advanoe The fighting wes extremely fierce. When Lagnicourt wes partly lost important reinforcements, supported by formidable artillery, rushed into the flame and smoke, captured the village and re-establiehed tbe line.
Still Progressing. Wellington, April 17 The High Commissioner reports, London, April 16th, at 12.15 p.m. General Haig reports having captured a vilturet at night Bouth-east-wards cf Hurdiconrt. We progressed north-westwrd of Lons.
Full particulars of the booty captured at Lieven and Souchez river is unavailable, but it iB exceedingly large, including a six-inch naval gun, thousands of rounds of ammunition of all calibres and transport material. The Biv. r’an losses in the recent fighting were heavy, more than onethird of the prisoners taken being Bavarians.
