WESTLAND RACING CLUB

EASTER MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING,

The weather yesterday morning was anything hut promising, but as the day wore on the atmosphere cleared and favourable conditions prevailed for tlio Westland Racing Club’s Easter meeting. The attendance was very satisfactory. The various events provided keen and exciting sport, there being excellent fields whilst the course despite the recent wet weather was in splendid going) order. As usual the various officials worked with a will. The starting of Mr. Harry Rutland was excellent, the large fields being dispatched on good style and excellent finishes were a tribute to Mr James Noblo’s handicapping. The tote investments amounted to £slßl against £6196 for 8 races last year. Mr. G. H. Gorton, Stipendiary Steward held one enquiry, a protest against the rider of Divorce by the rider of Warhawk for crossing in the High Weight Handicap, hut after hearing the two jockeys the protest was dismissed.

The gate-takings amounted to £135. The Town band was also present and played a number of selections during the afternoon. Tlio various booths appeared to be kept busy, the whole gathering passing off very successfully. ’l'll© following are the results: — HAMILTON MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 70 so vs., 61 furlongs:— (1) J. The lattw was soon passed by Golden Morn and Kiltess, who came along at a solid pace, both passing Listen in the straight. This was a most interesting race, a feature of the event being the particularly fast run made by Hymettius after being badly left —the horse being well up at tlio finish. Time 1,14 2-5. Toto £791. EXPRESS HANDICAP TROT (Saddle), of 60 sovs, 1 mile:— (1) G. Murfitt’s ENERGY,, (osecs) 1 (2) W. Wilson’s THE SPRINTER. (2 secs) 2 (6) H. W. Thompson’s TROJAN (8 secs.) 3
