A TITANIC CONFLICT.
Great Battle In West. (Received April 10, at 10.25 a.m.) London, April 9 Phillip Gibbs reports an attack on a twelve mile front was made a rain Btorm. The enemy recreated* to a strong rearguard line, where thoyare fighting desperately. The offensive aims at wrecking the northern end of Hindenbarg’s line. General Haig was too quick and frustrated Hindenburg’a plans for a retreat. A titanic conflict has begun. THE offensive begun. Of Immense Import. (Received April 10, at 11.30 a.m.) New York, April 9 Mr Simms, tho World's correspondent states the spring offensive is believed to have started, with the Lena Arras battle. The Tanka are creating consternation. The fighting is heavy. The Canadians are involved and the main objectives ere already gained. "V Airmen hovered overhead, render- ' icg immense service. Marvellous work by the artillery, protected the infantry which struggled against the sleet and German bombardment, with great gallantry. Simms expresses the opinion that the present battle is greater in intensity than the Somme operations.
