JELLICOE’S SUPPORT.

mm*"# To Need of Army. (Austr>l an & N.Z Cable A aviation and Reuter.) •LONDON, April 4. The Press Bureau states that'Sir John Jellicoc supported Sir Wm. ltobcrton a,s to the need of men for Tut* Army. The Navy’s business, he states, as far as the Army is concerned, is to help the King to get his armies v-u their destination and to maintain communications. ! He said the Navy alone cannot win the war. which must be won ashore. He hoped that if the German ships' come out to fight they would not t<tum. As to the submarine menace, their Submarines formerly attacked merchantmen on tthe surface, now they were forced to attack under water, which, although it greatly limited tlio submarine’s activity, it- was far more difficult to counter. In order to obtain security large numbers of small craft are required and he therefore appealed to ship-build-ing men to do their utmost. There is not one sovereign remedy for submarine methods or dealing therewith. There arc a combination of devices and fresh schemes daily introduced, and he added whilst it was true that submarines are not getting off scott free, there is undoubtedly a, serious time before the country for food economy. He tribated the gallantry of the mcr cantilo marine, and said the menace of shortage of food could be successfully combated! if ' the consumption were kept down to real necessities and aaoh worked hard in his own sphere with the single dim of successfully ending the war at the earliest moment-.
