While on the way from Lyttelton to Wellington on Saturday night a slight outbreak of fire occurred on the ferry steamer Maori. Shortly after 10 o’clock the funnels of the vessel became overheated through the coal dust becoming ignited and being drawn up the funnels. As a result some of the oil round the forced draught fans caught fire. The ship’s hose was run down fiom the deck, and tne outbreak V: as quelled in a few minutes. The tiro was over so quickly that very few of the passengers were aware of its existence.
