The Jane sailed for Okuru last night with general cargo and passengers. The Defender yaiicd last night for Wellington with a full cargo of timber, wool and butter. The following are some of the principal contracts affecting the Hokitika Postal District: Ross to Waiho Gorge, Hansbury & Had dock £435; Weheka, Haayt, and Okuru, J. J. Mulvaney £175; Hokitika to Rimu, Keenan Bros., £SO; Hokitika to Kokatahi, R. Mackley, £7O ; Hokitika Post Office to Railway Station and Wharf, J. Cameron £3B. In each case the subsidy paid is an annual one, and the period of each contract two years.
The following are the returns for the local Magistrate’s Court for tho quart er ending March 31st ,thc figures for the corresponding quarter last year being given in parenthesis for purposes of comparison: Plaints entered 80 (114), amount sued for £1033 (£889), amount recovered £761 (£508); fees collected in stamps £42 (£47); criminal cases dealt with 52 (45) ; hues collected £3-5 (£3l). The number of applications dealt with in the Warden’s court was 38, as against 45 for the corresponding quarter of last year. During tho quarter 121 Old Age Pensions were renewed.
In his reserved decision on a legal point in the petition of William Jeffries' (Sprot Jeffries and Co.) of Hokitika, to have Ivan Olsen, butcher, Greymouth adjudged a bankrupt, Mr Justice Sim over-ruled the point raised by Mr
Sargent for the debtor, and made an uo ipuod oiy, 'uojpjoipnrpu jo .lop.io which his Honour reserved liis decision was the contention, on behalf of the debtor, that the summons had not, been issued contemporaneously with the filing of the petition, and that, therefore, the application was null and void, and that consequently there was no jurisdiction to adjudge the debtor a' bankrupt. In a lengthy judgment, Mr. Justice Sim intimated that he had the advanatge of discussing .with Mr. Justice Cooper tho questions raised, and tho latter agreed with tire opinions expressed in the present judgment in regard to the 'requirements of Sections 3<5 and 37 of the Bankruptcy Act. One of hlie regulations is that iu future all punctuation signs and underlines in telegrams will be counted and charged ns one word each. On Saturday mght at the Westland Opera House tho Blackball Band will give a grand concert, when an attractive musical programme will be given. Popular pr.ces will be charged.

A witness at the sitting of the Military Appeal Board yesterday stated he was 34 years of age, that his father was 65 years oid and his mother about 40 or 50 years of age. The Chairman with a smile said if witness was 34 years of age his mother must at the least be over 40 years of age.
There is a good train service for the Hokitika races on Wednesday next. Mr Sieph9n Francis Loughraan expired at Reeftoa Hospital on Tuesday after a short illness. Deceased waa well known iu the Men ijiga district, where bo had resided for a very long t me. He wa« at one time licensee of the Progress Junction hotel, but later was engaged iu the supplying of coal from Merrijige, Deceased, who waa a native of Ireland, waa 70 years'cf age, and was pra-drceascd by his wife many years ago. He leaves a grown up family. The Overseas Orchestra meets for practice to-night at 8 o’clock sharp. A meeting of the Overseas Club Entertainment Committee will be held at the rooms at 8 o'clock this evening.
