HOKITIKA FIRE BOARD.

Tha quarterly meeting of the above Board was held yesterday at five o’clock Present: Messers H. L. Michel (chairman) F. McGregor, J. H. Wilson, J. J. Bi •ee.ze and H. M. Coulson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and outward correspondence approved. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows. From Messrs Grierson and Hopkins stating that they were unable to be present:—Received and leave of ab-

sence granted. \ From H. Hart nightwatehman explaining a discrepancy in the tell-tale clock record,- and stating that the explanation had been written before last meeting, but be (Mr. Hart) had not been informed when the meeting was to be held. It was agreed that the letter be received and tlie explanation recorded.

From same complaining that lie was not notified when the Board’s meetings were to take place, and claiming the right to be informed so that he might he present to explain any little matters necessary, and asking the Board to see that lie was notified.—Received. „ 'The Chairman said he thought there could be no objection to the nightwatcliman being informed when a meeting was about to take place, but this would not exempt him from answering the Secretary’s communications as the Secretary could not be ignored. If there was any ill-feeling between the Secretary and the niglitwatehman, that had nothing to do with them as a public body. The Secretary explained that soimi of the Board objected to the 'niglitwatclinuvn being present when they were discussing the performance of his duties. The chairman further explained that after Mr. Hart attended and made his explanations the Board could ask him to retire if they wished. It was eventually agreed that Mr. Hart be notified the time of meeting of the Board in the future.
