New Plymouth, March 21 To-day wan Taranaki’s biggo-it day inasmuch that the first ocean liner wan berthed at Moturoa Harbour. The occasion was celebiated by a public holiday &Dd a day on tbe seashore, where sports were held nnd a banquet given by New Plymouth to representatives of the rest of the province. In a speech, Mr A. Morton, chairman of the National Dairy Association, expressed the hope that very soon the whole of the cheese and butter would be taken by ships at New Pivmouth as weli as meat, instead of paying coa3tal charges to Wellington and there transhipped to tbo same boats as were now to oall at New Plymouth for meat. It is understood that from now on the Shaw, Savill and New Zealand Shipping Company will send their veesels here regularly for meat, and if is likely that in the near future the dairy produce of the whole of Taranaki also will be taken. The Harbour Bosrd proposes to continue the work of Extending and improving the harbor, wbioh now has 25ft in the fairway at lowest tides acd berthage and swinging basin 33ft at lowest tides.
