IN THE WEST
Official Report WELLINTGON, March 23. The High Commissioner reports from London, under date of March 23rd at 1.5 a.m., as follows*. Between the Somme, and the Oolse the enemy attempted a violent counter- , attack to throw us out from the East bank of the St. Quentin Canal on a, front from Cinsires to Montcscourt. Their successive attacks wore broken , by our machine gun tire, the Germans losing heavily . In the region west of Lafere the enemy were completely cheeked. South of the Oise. - our detachments crossed the Ai lotto at several points. Three attacks along our lino from Vregny to Chivres were stopped by our - barrage. ' In the region south of the Aisne our * artillery, enfilading the enemy, inflicted heavy losses. The enemy is still systematically pillaging the evacuated zono without the slightest military reason. There way fairly heavy artillery fighting at Woeyre and an enemy attempt on Romainvillo Farm near St. Miliel failed. | Reports are continuing to pour in t of Gorman vandalism in ttyo evacuated zone. a General Fleck, commander of the 17tli Army Corps, carried off the furniture of the house in which lie had resided < at Ham. : 1
