LIME WORKS COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the committee appointed for the purpose of establishing lima works on the West Coast was held fit the Borough Chambers, Greymouth on Wednesday at 12 o’clock noon.
Present : Messrs H. Betts (Chairman) representing Inangabua County Council, G, E, Perkin?, J. Greenslade, (Greymouth Borough Council) B. Ward (WestlaDd County Counoil,) Ryder, T. E, Coates, Jas Bell and A. H. Wheeler representing the farmers’ and W. B. Auld, (Clerk Inangahua County Council), secretary. An apology was received from Mr J. Rysll, Mr A. McTaggart M.S.A. Agriculturalist, Department of Agriculture, was weloomed by the Chairman and dealt very fully on the question and stated that he wished to inspect a ferther deposit of limestone. After which he would give his final report on the best site for establishing lime works and also on the estimated cost of same.
It was then moved by Mr Betts and seconded by Mr Ward that on receipt of the report furnished by Mr McTaggart together with that of the Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department on the subj6ot and also on the estimated cost at whioh lime could ba placed on trucks, ths committee again meets for the. purpose of considering the question of financing the undertaking with a view to making recoraendations on to their several local authorities,. Carried.
"It was resolved that the committee meet at the Borough Chambers, Greymouth, on Wednesday next at 1 o’clock p,m. to receive the aforesaid roport.
A vote of thanks to Mr MoTaggart for his attendance, the chairman presiding, and the Borough Council for the use of the Chambers concluded dhe meeting. .
Escaping steam from the Greymouth Borough Council’s ponderous crunoh« ing road roller frightened a horse drawing a cartload of meat from the Abattoirs when near the hospital Friday afternoon. The animal shied aud took no heed of the driver’s handling of the reins, with the result that the man, horse, cart and meat toppled over a small bank. The mao. and the meat were thrown out l but luckily no damage was done*, and after the cart and its load had been restored to their propor position on the highway the journey was resumed. - Colliery proprioi-ors ate particularly interested in inquiries being made by the Minister of Munitions and Supplies as to the comparative output of all mines throughout New Zealand during the first- two months of 1916 and There is a diversity of opinion among Dunedin proprietors as to the real purpose of the ministerial request for information. Several of those concerned in the industry think that the Department merely desires to obtain cvidencs as to whether or not there is serious operation this year of a “ ca’ canny” policy. Others hold the opinion how- 1 ever—an opinion that is gaining the greater support—that the ministerial inquiry as, to output indicates an intention on the part of the Government to take over the coal mining industry for j the remainder of the duration of the war,
