i Hokitika BranchA epecial general meeting of the above Brauck was bald at the County Chambers laut evening, the Presidoat (Mr U. J. Evan®) being in the chair. About a score of members - were pie* Bent. The meeting was called mainly to consider a sungestioa for a course of entertainments for patriotic purposes during the winter. Before taking up that business the President made a general statement as to the position of the Club, Mr Evans said the Club now had a membership of 94, beiug 54 ladies and 40 gentlemen.. To date the receipts had been subscriptions, £3O 7/ ; donations £94 6/4, refreshments £BB 2/0; tobacco fund, £lO4 6/2, a gross total of £317 1/6. The expenses to date for furnishing aud management had been £l7l 8/, in addition to which the amount raised for ( the tobacco fund had been remitted in j full, without deduction, to London. ] After allowing for outstanding accounts the net credit balance at date was £46. Mr Stewart thought something more should be done to foster subscriptions 1 to the Tobacco Fund, as the gifts of emokea to the men at the front were much appreciated. The Chairman stated the Club would be glad of all help to swell the Tobacco Fund, and read appreciative cards from men at the front for the gifts sent, It was announced that on Tuesday night next at tbs Opera House, Mr W. J, Pritchard manager of the weekly pictures, had preferred a benefit for the Tobacco Fund, which had been readily accepted, and tickets for admission were now on sale. It wits decided to take all possible steps to secure additional monthly contributions to the Tobacco Fund. The question of winter entertainments for the support of the patriotic work the Club had in hand was then discussed. After consideration it was resolved to open the winter socials with an Faster ball on Thursday, April 12th, and Mesdrmea Batland, Breeze, Fowler, Hatch, Miss Reynolds, and Messrs Staveley, Rowe and Dee were appointed an Entertainment Committee, with power to add to their numbers, to carry out the project and to continue the benefit socials fortnightly on Thursday evening. The ladies present were also appointed a Refreshment Committee to assist in arranging for the entertainment of soldiers and the general work of the Club. Mr Stewart congratulated the management on the high standard of these send offs, which were a credit to the town and all taking part in them, It was reported that the Club would be willing to take part in the celebration of Aczic Day (April 23) and for Empire Day (May 24) it was proposed to hold a benefit in aid of acquiring permanent rooms for the Soldiers’ Club. It was hoped that on Adzso Day the returned men would form an association and co-operate in the management of the quarters so as to make them as useful and as comfortable as possible for the returning men. The meeting then concluded.
