At about the time when business men were filling Queen Street on their ■way home at midday, says the Auckland “Star" of Saturday last, an alarm of fire drew an unusually largo number of people to Durham Street and the part of Queen Street near by, where a dense crowd of smoke showed the interior of tbe King George Picture Theatre to bs on fire. Tbe original outbreak was in the operating box, where the operator soon overcame the flame?, leaving only ths moving amoke to show that there had been a fire. The City Brigade arriyed shortly after the alarm was giveD, but the proprietor of the theatre (Mr Cfeland) states that he had practically mastered it, so that their attendance was unnecessary. The brigade, however, concentrated great water power on to the interior of the building, and obviated any danger of further outbreak. The damage from water was far in excess of that by fire.
