HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Monday, March 19. The Committee met at 7.30 p.m. Present—Messrs Clarke (Chairman), King, Hickson, Aitkeo, Preston, Lloyd, Stevenson, Shannon and Stewart, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From the teacher, Goldsborongh* stating that Committee would not grant holiday for annual excursion.—• Received. From Education Board, stating that a grant had been made for shingling, not asphalting as Btated previously.— Received. From Stationmaster, stating that arrangements were being made for postponement of picnic.—Received. From Blackball Committee, re picnic arrangements,—Received. From T. Wylie, stating that on account of his being called up for medical examination, the school at South Beach was closed oa the 20th inst.— Received.
From Education Board, granting request for louvres in lavv'ory. Also agree to pay account for glazing, and mentioning that Mr White had already been appointed Truant Officer for the West Coast.—Received.
From Ruatapu Committee, asking if this Committee was granting 'a holiday on Monday 19th inst.—Received.
From Rector; forwarding resignation from MLs Neilson.—Received and accepted. Board to b 9 asked to fill the position an sooo as possible, Fxom Education Board, asking for nse of technical school for one week for teachers’ class in nature study, during which the school would be closed from the 19th inat.—Received and agreed to. From teacher, South Spit, re teachers’ class and statiug the average attendance for the month wa3 13.8. Received.

From Rector, reporting average attendance of 332 ont of roll number of 362 ; forwarding library oolleotious for subsidy ; stating the senior team won the Evans shield competition, and the teaohera’ nature classes had begun that day.—Received and adopted.
Tha Visiting Committee (Messrs Stevenson and Hickson) reported on conditions at the sohool.—Received.
The report of tbe eub-committee re faros of High School pupils was received and approved. In connection with the School holidays it was resolved that Good Friday and Easter Monday be holidays, and that there be one week commencing on 14th May and two weeks commencing on 27th August. The Secretary reported in connection with the schools’ excursion that there was a credit balance of £9 4/1. The Sub-Committee in District Sohools Association submitted a list of rules for approval and recommended that they be brought into force immediately after the new Committees were elected, —Received and adopted. Accounts amounting to £9 5/ were passed for payment. Mr Martin, Instructor in Agriculture, met the Committee with Inspector Va’entine, and explained the proposed course in rural work. Ha gave an interesting and instructive address on the subject and answered a number of question. Mr de Berry also spoke on the subject, after which Mr King moved and Mr Aitken seconded that the Canterbury Board be asked to commence as early as possible a course of rural science at Hokitika, among the first year scholars of the High Sohool. The motion waa agreed to on the voices. The Chairman then thanked Mr Martin for hiß attendance and interesting explanation, which Mr Martin b. rfiy acknowledged, expressing his pleasure at the decision of the Committee.
The Committee rose at 9.30 p.m.
