WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL
Tuesday, March 13ih. The Council met at 2 p.m. Present: —Messrs H. Norman (Chairman), J. A. Murdoch,. A, Clifton, J. Grimmond, T. W. Bruce, T. W. Duff, S. G. Ferguson, R. Wells and B. Ward. Mr Duff moved that the Overseer attend to necessary repairs at Hatters Track, —Seconded by iha Chairman and carried.

Mr Clifton moved that £lO be Spent in repairs to Adau’s R >ad. —Seconded by Mr Weils and carried. Mr Bruce moved ihat it be an instruction to the Riadtuen to keep an eye on absent soldiers’ property, to gave it from wauicsn damage.—Seconded by Me Walla and carried. Mr Grim mono moved that the Council convey to Sir John Findlay tbßir congratulations on his election as member for Hawkes Bay.—Seconded by the Chairman and carried. The Chairman’s report referring to the visit of the Minister was read and received.
ORDER PAPER. The Chairman moved : —“ That the accounts presented for the month of February, 1917, as revised and recommended for payment by the Finance Committer, amounting to £612 3/, be passed for payment.”— Seconded by Mr Doff and carried. The Chairman moved :—“ That the Council now consider the list of works for application for Government grants for the year 1917-18.” Seconded by Mr Murdoch and oarried. Mr Grimmond moved :—“ That where the Public Works Department has a difficulty in obtaining labor for the expenditure of authorised grants in the Okt.ru Riding, it be suggested communication be opened with the District Improvement Committees at Bruce Bay and Okurn to endeavor to arrange for the supply of the necessary labor to prosecute the urgently required works to open up the district, for the benefit of settlement.” — Seconded by Mr Doff and carried.
STATUTORY MEETING. The Chairman moved :—“ That pursuant to the provisions of seccion 25 of the Counties Act, the Council now proceed to consider, and if necessary, adjust the representation of the several Ridings in accordance with the terms of the Act.”—Seconded by Mr Bruce and carried. Mr Ward moved :—“ That the representation remain as at present,"— Seconded by Mr Duff. Mr Grimmond moved an amendment :—That Knmara and Stafford ridiDgs be amalgamated and Arahura and Kanieri ridings be amalgamated, reducing the membership from nine to seven.”—Seconded by Mr Bruce. The amendment was put and lost, Messrs Grimmond and Bruce voting “Aye,” The motion was then carried, The Council rose at 4.15 p.m. Recruiting Committee. The Committee met at 3.30 p.m. The County Chairman presided and there were present County Councillors Messrs Coulson, McGregor and R. King. A letter was read from the Recruiting Board, Wellington, asking that the Committee take steps to peruse bDd check the roll of the first division and to inform the Department of any omissions.—Received. After discussion it was resolved that the matter be held over for a month, and meantime separate lists of the roll, for the nine County ridings and the several boroughs, suoh being supplied to members for their consideration. The Committee then rose.
