The Magistrate’s Court Greymouth was occupied yesterday, when Mr T. Hutchison S.M. heard a charge against Maurice J. Fitzgerald, hotelkeeper of Greymouth of seditious utterances. Defendant pleaded • not guilty. A r ery lengthy evidence was given for the prosecution and defence, His Worship reserving judgment.

While returning to the Taramakaa Settlement via Westbrook on Saturday evening Mr P. Nicholas met with an accident. The horse stumbled at Westbrook, and the occupants of the cart (Mr and Mrs Nicholas end Mr Kean) were thrown out. All escapid injury, however, save Mr Nicholas, who received injuries to his head, right arm and ribs. The two shafts of the cart were broken.

The final game of the tie in the first round of section A, of the singles -championship was played on the bowling green last evening wheu the partly played game between Stewart and Anderson was completed, Stewart proving the winner by 20 to 16. The winners of tho sections were therefore Stewart, H. Thompson, J. H. Wilson and Stevenson. Two games for tho final round have been played, Stevenson having won both. He now meets Stewart and if successful wili again be the champion. A loss would mean the playing off by tho other section winners, before the decision could be arrived at. The game between Stewart and Stevensor takes place this evening. Mr J. A. Valentine, Inspector of Schools, returned on Saturday afternuou from a visit of inspection of the schools of South 'W es tl snc h Mr Valentine had glorious weather for his journey and has come back enraptured with the district. The scenic beauties of course won his great admiration and he considers that South Westland fully equals the beauties of the Hermitage trip. Mr Valentine spoke in glowing terms of the splendid condition of the cattle throughout the southern district and ventured the opinion that a great future lay before the district which would prove to be the cattle rais. ing district of the South Island in the future.

A capital audience attended the Frincess Theatre last evening, when Mr Pol,’ard presented a very attractive double bill. “ Midnight at Maxims ” served to introduce a great programme of clever dancing add fancy ballets. Some of the stage dances were of an txceptionally clever nature, while the dressing was superb. The Donkey dance was one item that caused special laughter. “The Sins of tho Mothers,” a star drama was of a totally different style. It served 10 show the craving of an inherited passion for gamblieg and how a happy home was broken up by the young wife’s habits. The story was well told and brilliantly acted, making a very fine representation. A feature of the evening was the incidental music for the pictures supplied by Miss Watson of Brunner, who won general approbation by her artistic accompaniments.

The death took place this morning of a very old and respected resident of Kanieri in the person of Mr John Forsyth, at the ripe old age of 83 years. Deceased had been a resident of Kanieri from the days of the gold rush in that locality, following the fortunes of that fi-H with, varying success.. Deceased leaves a wife, sod and dAughte’, the two former being residents of Kanieri, while the daughter resides in the North Island, besides numerous grand children. To them is extended a heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement.
