HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Friday, March 9. The Council met at 8.30 p.m. Pre-sent—-Messrs Coulsan (chair), SlapletoD, J. King, R, King, and F. McGregor. Apologies wera made for Messrs Perry, Jeffries and Richardson. Tha minutes cf the previous meeting were read and confirmed and outward correspondence road and approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.-' From an enthusiast, offering to keep the flower beds in Macandiew Park iD order.—Received and offer accepted with thanks. From Westland Chamber of Commerce suggesting the Council offer Park reserve to the Government as a site for the agricultural farm.—Received. Mr J. King moved that the the suggestion be approved and the offer be made at a peppercorn rent.— Seconded by Mr McGregor and carried.
From Blackball Picnic Committee, thanking Council for use of Orbs Square.—Reoeived. From E. H. Hiley, General-Manager NZ. Railways, regretting it is not practicable at present to speed up the Otira train to Greymouth and stating the Giey-Hekitika (rain could not be delayed 1£ hours to connect with tha overland service.—Received.
From Postal Department Wellington, on same subject.—Received. From Minister of Labor, Wellington, notifying Wednesday had been fixed as tha weekly half holiday,— Received.
From McKecz'a County Council, re proposal for customs tax of on motor tyres.—Received ; considered by Council that the time was inopportune for action.
In connection with the letter from County Council re deed of lease for steps on railway bridge, &d opinion from the Borough Solicitor was read stating there was a risk of a claim for damages arising out of an accident therefrom.—Rsceived, Mr McGregor moved that tha Council cannot agree to execute the deed in its present form, —Seconded by Mr J. King arid carried.
Accounts amounting to £338 13/1 were passed for payment. The Finance Committee recommended that the nighteoil contract be extended for 12 months at £24 per month.—Received and adopted. From Treasurer, reporting receipt® £250 11/2, payments £l4l 16/1, debit balance £l6O 15/2. —Reoeived. From Abattoir Manager, reporting during February tbere were examined 10 cows, 45 bullocks, 152 sheep, 87 iambs, 4 calves. Condemned 1 pig. Ftes for month £4l 4/.—Received.
Mr R King protested that no action had been taken to put in a drain pipe from Livingstone Street Creek. The Council rose at 9.15 p.m.
