Professor Salmond (PER PEEBB ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHTI. Dunedin March 6 The death is announced of Dr Wilson Salmond, Emeritus Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at the CKago Univir.-ity, aged eighty-Urn years. i F. W. IVlarchant.
Ti.maru, March 6 News has been received or the death iD England on February 11th of Mr Frederick William Matchant, weii known in New Zealand ns *n civil engineer. He had much to do with the earlier harbour works at Tirnarn. He laid out New Plymouth breakwater, and was consulted at Gisborne and elsewhere. At Gisborne be laid cut the water supply, and drainage. As engineer to local bodies in South Canterbury, he laid cut many eyctems of water-races, built the first teiro-ccn crete bridg9 in New Zealand, over the Opihi, and designed and car. ried out in many pieces a system of confining vagrant thingle livers at bridges by means of artificial banks, which has been the means of saving thousands of pounds to local authorities. He leaves a widow, two married daughters and one son, Dr Eric M&rchaot, of the New Zealand A.M.C. in France. Another poo, a captain in the B.h Mounted Rifles, was killed in Egypt.
