Mr Hughes in a statement of the ■circumstances leadiog to the dissolution, said since he had asked for an ►extension of the life of Parliament there had arisen grave reasons which -could only be disclosed to members of the Chamber. This knowledge Ehould make clear the danger that now assailed the Empire. This was the gravest crisis of the war. Referring to labour opposition to the prolongation ho said wo have done everything possible to secure unity, and to follow the lead of Britain and other Dominions, but the opposition will not permit us. They care nothing for the Empire, and care nothing except for its downfall.
