Arahura’s Position.

GISBOItNE, March 3. The Araliura, which collided with an ocean liner, lies in a good position, on a hard sandy bottom. A heavy southerly or south-easterly is the only weather to be feared. The vessel is partly protected by a breakwater. The weather has moderated.

Water is all through the ship to a depth of about 16 feet, and the vessel remains in a steady position. The crew still remain aboard.

Operations have been practically suspended, pending the arrival of the tug Terawhiti.

Tho proposal to utilise the dredger Maui has- been abandoned. Tlie prospects are considered eery hopeful. AUCKLAND, March 4. The liner which collided with the Aiahura anchored hero ait 4 a.m. to-day, and will probably go alongside the dock wharf to-morrow.

SALVAGE OPERATIONS NOT YET A SUCCESS GISBORNE, March 4. Salvage operations on the Arahura mve so far proved unsuccessful, and the vessel has settled down into sand until the deck is level with the wafer. The tug Terawliiti arrived at 12.40 this morning and went alongside the Arahura' an hour later. Tho night was spent in making preparations and pumping commenced at dawn. The Arahura’,s how appears to have lifted slightly, but the results of pump ing seem so far to indicate that thero is a large hole in tho vessels bottom, but which is not yet located. Better progress is expected to be made at low water. The weather fortunately remains beautifully calm and fine.

THE ARAHURA.

Prospects of Refloating.

Gisrorne, March 5 Pumping operations on the b.s. Arahura were suspended at 4.30 yesterday, on account of a hijsrh list that developed, as the ship regained her buoyancy. It was decided to wait till low tide for the ship to regain an even keel, and to take measures to pi event a further list.

Tha vesa=l was again on an even keel this morning, and puraniag was resumed by iho tug Terawbiti. Chains have been attached to the Terawbiti and Tuatea to help keep the Arahura in an upright noMrion. A second diver has been sent from tha shore to accelerate the patching work on the vessel’s side.

It is hoped to maka an attempt at refloating on the afternoon tide. The sea is calm and the prospects are considered satisfactory. Operations Progressing. Gisborne March 4 On the Arahnra, up to moon, there was excellent progress with the pumping. the water being reduced to within 4 feet or 5 feet of the engine room plates. A powerful stationary pump is being installed to provide the vessel with independent means of coping with the water when refloated. Unfortunately the weather changed about mid-day, an easterly swell interfering with th 9 moorings of the tug boats and suspending diving operations. The engine room staff is engaged in blocking up rivet holes etc, as the water in the vessel is reduced. Fatal Fall.
