LATE WAR NEWS.

German Desperation

London, Feb 25

The Daily Chronicle's correspondent at Amsterdem says that evidence in accumulating of the desperation of the German people. “My informant,” states the correspondent, “who left Germany a week ago, eays that hundreds of workmen in the shipyards and ammunition factories are ailing as fbe result of under-feeding. This has caused a serious shortage of labour. At the Vuioan yards at Stettin where submarines are being constructed, many hundred of men struck as a protest, against nnder-feeding. The police used arms to suppress the demonstrations but the spirit of revolt is spreading and the strikers have steadily increased. At Hamburg, thousands of hungry women and ill-clad children a fortnight ago marched in silence to the Burgomaster. The house police roughly dispersed them. At Berlia the position is equal l ? threatening. E ; ght thousand employees of the General Electric Company are demanding better wages and food.

Many of the hospitals are overflowing with men who have collapsed from starvation. Great queues of women and children wait at the back doors of the more expensive restaurants to receive refuse. The authorities are helpless to obtain and distribute relief.

There were desperate scenes at Dormund on the 19th. A huDgry mob sacked the shops and attacked the police. Cavalry with drawn swords rode in the midst of the crowd and many were injured. Holland is increasingly anxious* fearing a sudden German food raid.
