Alleged Illegal Telegraphing

In the Magistrate's Coart to-d ay Mildred Sidney Herman Manning, indent agent, was charged that he telegraphed on May 20th to one, Imamura Kobe, ae toll owa : “‘Waiting reply, Fraser." thereby attempting to indirectly communicate by telegraph thaough Irn»raura with the Winokler Company, Japan, whioh was alleged to be an enemy 6rm. /
The defence was that defendant had acted honestly thronghout the transaction, although possibly erroneously. Ha had no intention of contravening the law. Decision was reserved.
Charge of Manslaughter.
Dunedin, Feb 26
Williim L?.lor Shiel, aged twentytwo was arrested this morning on a charge of manslaughter in connection ■with the death of Nail M’Cullocb, who was killed in a collision of a motorbioycle with a bicycle on Ft-b. aary 14. Shiel was before the Court this morning .and remanded to appear on Friday next. Bail was fixed at £2O 0 with two other sureties of £IOO each.
A Bather Browned
Wellington, Feb 26
Arthur Mammduke Shields of Hawke’a Bay, sheep farmer, waa drowned yesterday while bathing at Sponge Bay. He only arrived on Saturday to spend a few days with hia family. He leaves a widow and four «bildren.
Drowned in Surf.
Waiiii, Feb 26
William Patten, aged thirty-two was accidentally drowned yesterday wbile surf bathing at Waihi beach. A party of four, including young women got into difficulties in big qaick successive rollers and a strong tide which rendered rcscuo difficult, Three were got out by the aid of a life line, but Patten, after a long struggle finally disappeared 300 yards from tbo shore. Deceased came from Australia and was a widower with three young children living at Ballarat.

A Lecturer’s Statement
Hamilton, Feb 28
Angry scenes ware witnessed last night at a lecture on “ Who Caused the War,” by Rev Howard Elliott. The lecturer sought to show that Catholics throughout the world were in league against Britain, and he was subjected to a tirade of bitter interjections throughout.
Hia declaration that the Pope wag responsible for the present European conflict, in his anxiety to secure world domination, caused a tremendous outburst of invective, and the leoturer, who had a difficulty in proceeding, ordered the police to remove several interrupters.
At the conclusion, a crowd waited for and followed the lecturer, who had to be escorted by the polioo. He favuntoally escaped in a motor.
