Taranaki Farmers’ Appeal-

Before the Military Service Appeal Board at Hawera, Taran.ki, on Wednesday, Ernest Frank Cox, and Thomas Samuel Cox, farmers, Opunake (Mr O’Dea), who were called up under Section 35, asked for exemption on ground of undue hardship. It was stated by appellants that for over two and a half years they had leased 300 acres of land from their father, They milked 100 cowa by machines, and on tho property were 100 sheep, 100 fattening cattle, and 100 calves. There were three married brothers and one single brother of eighteen. The father had been ill for twenty years and was unable to do much. One was prepared to go into camp in April, the other to be left to look after the farm. They had not decided which brother should go.

Captain Y/alker : Come on now, make a sportiug offer. Will you go into camp on April 1 ? The spokesman, after a moment’s thought, said “Righto,” Captain Walker : Now, which one of you will go and leave the other to look after tho farm?

The spokesman appellant (Ernest) : We haven’t decided yet. Captain Walker : Who is the beat farmer?—l reckon we are about the same. Mr O’Dea: Come, now, let us toss for it—Very well. MrO’Daa: Heads you go, Ernest; tails you go, Thomas. Are you agreed ? —Yea. The coin was spun, and Mr O’Daa announced: “ It’s you, Thomas.” (Laughter.) Captain Walker: Thomas is‘the lucky one. The spokesman (Ernest) : Bat will he agree to go into camp in April. Thomas: Ob, yes. I offered to go in the first place, in the street just now. The board decided to dismiss Thomas’s appeal, audkto grant him leave till April 1, Ernest’s appeal was adjourned sine die, and be was ordered tor |'.ri himself monthly.
