MINISTERIAL VISIT.

Hon W. Fraser in Westland

The Hon W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, accompanied by Mr McAlister, private secretary, arrived from Christchurch on Saturday. The Hon Minister was met at Otira by Mr H. Norman, ConDty Chairman, Mr J. A. Murdoch, Mayor of Kumara, and Mr J. Grimmond, Mayor of Ross. Mr J. Dickson, Resident Engineer of Greymouth, also joined the party. ‘ln order to inspect the river encroachment at Harris’ the party motored by road to Hokitika, via Kumara. At Harris’ a short stay was made where the serious encroachment of the Teremakau river was inspected, A deputation of settlors met the Minister at the danger spot, and viewed the menaoe. The new deviation road as well as a large area of country is affected, and steps will have to be taken to arrest what is a very serious danger,

The party reached Hokitika about 8 p,ra, and stayed at Keller’s Hotel. Yesterday afternoon, tho visitors motored to Ro.s, whence they started to-day on tho south trip. This morning the Minister was taken to Waitaha Settlement, and at tbe Dairy Factory was met by the settlers. Afterwards the journey was resumed» the intention being to reaoh Waiho Gorge this afternoon. The party today rnclnded the three County members of the southern ridings and MrW. Millner, County Overseer. To-night deputations will be taken at Waiho Gorge, including settlers from the far south who are journeying up to meet the Hon Minister.

To-niorrow morning the Minister will visit Okarito, aud in the forenoon Wataroa Flit, where deputations will also be received. In the afternoon the journey north will be resumed, and will include au inspection of Waogauui Fiat settlement. In the evening the settlers at Hari Hari are to entertain the Minister at a banquet. Ou Wednesday the party return to Hokitika via Ross, -Rimu Flat and Kokatahi. Deputations will be taken at Hok’tika in the evening, and the next day the Minister goes north via Arahura Valley, Stafford and Goldsborough to Kumara.
