HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL
Friday, Feb 23.
The Council mat at 8 p.m. Present—Messrs Coulson (cha'r), R King, J Kmg, atipleron, McGregor, Jeffiies and Richardson. SPECIAL MEETING. The Chairman moved a formal resolution in connection with the giving of notice of the biinging into force of the raw fcyi'-'ava. —Seconded by Mr McGregor and cirrisd, ORDINARY MEETING. The minutes cf the previous meeticg were read and confirmed and outward correspondence road and appr'ved. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Perry and Richards. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Mackenzie County G.muoil asking support of tax of 10% ad valorem customs duties on motorcars, and that the amount be paid to local bodies. —Received ; consideration deferred.
From Hokitika School Committee asfemg Mayor to proclaim a public holiday for excursion day.—Rscawed aDd agreed to. From Westland County Council stating the District Railway Engineer had notified that the Borough Council was not prepared to aigu the deed of indeirfnity in connection with the steps from Wadeson Island-to the railway bridge, and dieting to take over liability of deed in proportion lo proportion paid for upkeep of the bridge. —Received; consideration deferred till next meeting.
From Blackball Picnic asking iev use of Cass Square for Friday, March 2nd.—Received ; request granted. From Sir James Alien, acknowledging resolution re classification of Second Divisioa and stating the matter had already received attention. — Received.
From J. Lock and E. Morris, stating uncertificated meat was being sold in larga quantities in Ruatipu district, and asking that steps be taken to prevent the oootinaance of the sale?. —Received ; teferred to Abattoir Committee to take action.
From J. T. Myers, tscx'on, asking for two weeks’ holiday. — Received; request granted. From Hnweta Borough Cniccil, thanking Council for support of resolution re Second Division claetification. —Received. From Hon W. Fraser, stating he would reach Hokhika on Saturday aft3rnoon by motor. —Received. Mr R, King suggested that the Minister be approached in connection with the railway connection,—Referred to Mayor to deal with. From Tieasuror, receipting reoeipts £ll3 11/11, payments £2ll 4/1, debit balance £343 14/. —Received. Accounts amounting to £l4l 16/6 were passed for payment.
Mr Richardson asked that the drain in Sewell Street, north of Hampden Street receive attention. It was overgrown and there was a decidedly strong otnell arising therefrom. After discussion it was resolved that toe matter be uttendtd to.
The question of the Borough Inspector Bummonsing owners of wandering stock was brought up by Mr McGregor, who said the cattle should be impounded and owners summonsed. By impounding them, tho cattlo were at once taken off the street and so saved a lot of damage being done to the drains which were continually being trampled in. Atter discussion, during which it was stated that the Inspector's instructions were to summons instead of impounding, when he was certain of the ownership Mr McGregor said he would give notice of motion to rescind these instructions for next meeting.
The Council then adjourned at 8.45 p.m,
