The Senate’s Judiciary Committee has decided not to report the Bill urged by Mr- Lansing, • conferring power on the President to use the Army and Navy to enforce America's rights and obligations, because it gives too much authority for one man.
Returned Belgians
Amsterdam, Feb 22
Many deported Belgians have returned owing to illness. Some have developed tubercoloais. They were hitherto strong. They complain that they wbre nearly starved and had bread once weekly, and a mixture of vegetables which were often rotten daily. They describe their stay in Germany as being in hell.
Swedish Loss
New York, Feb 22
The American Consul General at Barcelona reports that the Swedish steamer Skoglund has beea submarined. Her crew, including five Americans have landed.
Australian Losses
Melbourne, Feb 23 In the House of Representatives Mr Pearce stated that an average of 43 per cent wounded and sick returned to duty. The rest had to be replaced. To date there were 18,974 killed, 3645 miesing and 941 prisonered. Mr Hughes said Government hoped to arrange with the States to avoid dual taxation on the same. Mr Pearce stated that troops abroad suffering from venereal disease would not be returned to Australia, but be sent to special hospitals overseas.
