SCHOOL COMMITTEE PROTEST.

Question of a Donation

When handing in the collection in aid of the schools excursion at the meeting of the School Committee last eveniog, Mr Hickson took exception to the contents of letter appearing in the morning paper a few days ago over the signature of W. Jeffries, protesting against the numerous collecting lists going round. Mr Hickson objaoted to the term that the collectors for the sehool excursion were “ dunning the public,” or that the subscription list was “engineered.” As for the “abase” mentioned he thought it was Mr Jeffries who was the abuse not the School Committee.

Mr Hickson mentioned that he had waited on Mr Jeffries and had invited a small donation which was refused. He had not waited on the business people only, He had a*ked every parent he had met and all had given something Mr Shannon—Except Mr Jeffcies ?

Mr Hickson—He’s not a parent, Continuing, Mr Hickson said he thought it was colossal impudence on Mr Jeffries part to say in which way the Committee Bhould carry out its duties, especially as there were none of his children attending the school, and he had not donated anything towards the funds,

Mr Preston—And he gave the same donation last year.

After some farther expressions of disapproval of the terms of the letter the next business was called, and the matter dropped.
