BUSINESS CELERITY
(To the Editor.) Sib,—lt is a great pity that many people do not m»ko bigger efforts for progression than was evinced by two or three speakers at the School Committee meetiug ixporlod about last night’s meeting The Chairman was sailed to account because he did not call a special meeting auent the Floral Fete holiday and yet forsootb he interviewed the members of the Commitee and six out of nine agreed to the school closing at 1 p.m. on the day in question.
Would it not be a waste of time and energy to write out notices to Bend same to nine members of a Committee and get them to meet in the usual place of meeting, write minutes, etc., etc, to decide on so trivial a mattpr. It certainly would have been much easier for the Chairman to have given instructions to the Secretary to send out the notices etc., but evidently being desirouß of avciding the fifth wheel of a coach method and so saving time in addition to be Btudioua of not throwing unnecessary labour and a poorlypaid secretary, be actually personally saw the members and a twe-third® majority agreed on the course adopted. What can it be that prompts conduct that appears to be nothing but ■fcubbornneaa ; the talk of setting the children a good example ie quite useless in face of such conduct from our manhood.
. Many years ago I was a member of the Borough Council and sat on various Committees —Pnblio Works, Hospital and Finance Committea on which 1 always gave every facility for the Chairman of any of the Committees to act promptly in the beat interests of: the town aDd never hampered him. with the idea that ths aub-Dommittee< should be called together for triflingmatters.
I could give many illustrations, hub this ia not necessary, as common sense ought to instil the idea in men or women possessed of average intelli-
gence. It behaves all Britishera at the present juncture to do what they can far the common weal, there will certainly be occasion when we ought to adopt the Nelaon method of puttiag the blind eye to faults. Avoid bickerings, be straightforward and do everything we can to bring progression and be rid of (all cumbersome methods, ia my motto,
Yonrp,
