NAPIER, Feb. 13,
The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald presided over a meeting of the waterside employees to-day, held in committee.
The Minister is endeavouring to bring the parties together to effect a settlement, but so far without success. To-night the waterside leaders and Mr J. Roberts, secretary of the Federation of Labour, addressed a crowded meeting in the Municipal Theatre.
The Arbitration Court was blamed for the whole trouble, as the members of that Court were not acquainted with waterside conditions.
A resolution as passed deploring the strike and urging the Government to bring the parties together in conleience.
Free labour is engaged on the Homo liners in the Bay and unloading another.' Coastal shipping lias practically ceased, and some ships are laid up. The employers’ representatives stated late to-night that there was a probability of the dispute being settled, and the men returning to work in the morning. Butler Feeling. WESTPORT, Feb 13. Owing to the alleged refusal of coal owners to meet the miners’ Federation in conference, it is understood that Denniston have determined to restrict the output of coal from that mine( and are limiting their earnings to 12s per day.
From enquiries it is learned that the Westport Coal Co. wore not requested for a conference by either the Miners Federation or the district unions; also the Westport Coal Co. is not a member of the Coal Owners’ Association. It is said that the Granity Miners Union at a meeting held on Holiday night decided by a large majority not to restrict the output at the Millcrtou
