Men Refuse Two Boats-
{per press association. —copyright], Wellington, Feb 8 Work was proceeding quietly at the waterfront to-day except in the cases of the John and the Putiki, which had arrived from Wanganui. When a call was made for men to work cargo, there wes no response, the men declining to work the ships because they had been loaded by free labour at Wanganui. A later call was made for men to coal the John, but again there was no response, Nolson Workers’ ClaimNelson, Feb 8 When the Anchor Company’s steamer Kaitoa arrived from Motueka to-day no waterside workers appeared her cargo, which was handled by the company’s permanent staff until 4 o’clock, when the wharf labourers pat in an appearance and were engaged. The Kaitoa cleared for Wellington half an hour late. Similar troutre occurred yesterday in connection with the Onion Company’s s,s, Maponriko. The wharf labourers claim that labour should be engaged at specified hours.
