The Overseas Orchestra will held a full practice at the Club rooms this evening, commencing at 8 o’clock. There will be a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Hokitika to-morrow morning at 10 o’clock. Justices will preside.
The bowling match between the Hokitiki and. Grey Clubs which was postponed last Saturday owing to rain, will take place next Saturday on the Hokitika green.
The Westland Chamber of Commerce will hold its quarterly meeting at the County Chambers. The sitting takes place to-night at 7.30 o’clock, and the meeting is open to the public.
Last night was an exceptionally rough and stormy one. There was a heavy south westerly gale blowing throughout the night, with special violence at times. A heavy sea is running th's morning. The Municipal Band will play a programme at the Floral Fete to-morrow afternoon. On Sunday afternoon ’he band intends playing a programme at the Mental Hospital. A donation of 10/ is acknowledged from Mr W. H. Harris.
Mr H. Norman, County Chairman, yesterday despatched a telegram to the Hon Aoting Premier expressing regret at the death of Dr McNab, and sympathy with the National Ministry in the loss of a valued colleague. Mr Allen replied as follows: “On behalf of the Government, I have to thank you for your message of sympathy in the loss of our late colleague, the Hon Dr McNab.”
At the farewell to the local draft for the 26th Reinforcements to be held at the Town Hall to-morrow night, the vocalists will include Misses S.apleton, Perry, Davidson and Wells, and Mr Whyte. The Overseas Orchestra will contribute two patriotic marches. The Mayor and others will speak. The public are invited to attend the function, whieh begins at 8 o’clock. In addition to tbe men leaving, all returned soldiers are invited to be present.
The death took place at Wanganui on Saturday of Mrß Henry Young, a former resident of Greymouth for’3o years, Deceased was born in Hereford, England acd came to Australia in 1861, in the ? ship Elizabeth Kimball, married in 1839 in Melbourne and came to Hokitika with her husband by the Claude Hamilton, later selling in Grey mouth. She leaves t three sons, 11. G. at Auckland, W. L. and Charles G. at Wanganui. The latter was a former well known threequar- . ter of the White Star (Grey) Football Club.
Cass Square will be a busy scene tomorrow afternoon when the Presbyterian Floral Fete takes place. This annual fixture is always a very attractive and enjoyable gathering and the present one promises to excel past efforts, The on’y thing necessary to ensure success is for the weather to hold up fine for tbe day. There promises to be a very fine display in the decorated classes on this accasion, which have always been a special feature of previous gatherings. A nominal charge for admission will be made at the gates.
A capital programme was presented at tho Princess Theatre last evening by Mr Pollard. There was a fine scries of the latest graphics and ggz-.-ttos, followed by an amusing cartoon. Then the rest of the programme was coutamed in a very fine Keystone representation ot “The Chalice of Courage.” The picture was set in the high mountains of North America and the photography was very good indeed. The artists were of a high standard and the whole representation a highly satisfactory one, some of the scenes being of a very tense nature. The picture proved a very enjoyable one.
