McLeans Pictures at the Opera House last evening attracted a large audic-ce. The programme was a very fine one and gave great pleasure to those pre'pnt. During January there were 21G lisurs 51 minutes of sunshine recorded at Hokitika. The rainfall during the same pei:od was 2.22 inches.
Fireman J. J. Mclntosh will represent the Hokitika Fire Brigade at the annual conference of the N.Z, Fire Brigades Association to be held at Balclutha next month.
Mr John Peake, Clork to the Hokitiha Harbor Board, who went into camp at Trentham about a month ago, for military training, and was given N.C.O. rank, has been discharged as medically unfit, and returns to Hokitika tki3 evening.
Mr Henry Gibson, whose death at Greymouth was recorded in Thursday’s issue was a brother of Mr Andrew Gibson, the well known resident of Kanieri, who is now tho oniy surviving brother of this well known family.
A plague of the small crustacean, known as whale feed, has, states a Wellington newspaper, occurred at Paelcakariki within the last few days. Millions of them havo been washed up on the beach, and it is reported that in. some places they are two feet deep The effect of the heat has been to decompose the bodies, causing an almost unbearkble stench.
The quarterly meeting of the Westland Chamber of Commer:e t*kjs puce on Tuesday evening at the County Chambers, when the public are invited to attend. All interested iu the general welfare of the district should mako it a point of attending these meetings, so that matters of public interest might be discussed and otherwise advanced for the benefit of the place.

Manly, the seaside resort of Sydney people, was raided recently by an army of spiders. They came in aeroplanes — flying webs, which became anchored to trees, fences and telegraph wires. Some of these webs were only a few inches long. Others - ran to yards. The invaders were so snail as to be hardly dis. tinguishable by tho eye. It is net known, of course, where they came from but students of natural history arc agreed that on occasion these spiders travel through the air some hundreds of miles before their webs come to earth. They apparently have no control of their descent, for thousands fell into the ocean contiguous to the town, while fishermen operating in boats iu the vicinity returned covered with both spiders and webs.
