(Frum Uur Own Correspondent.) A CHURCH CELEBRATION, The Jubilee of St Paul’s Cburob, Ross was celebrated on Thursday by a special service m the evening, at which there was a largo congregation. The Revd Williams, of Christchurob, preached a very eloquent sermon from the text “ What WM Thou have me to do.” Appropriate Hymns to the occasion were suug and heartily joined in by all present. Mrs Monahan presided at the organ.
At 9 o’clock a large gathering took place in the schoolroom which was presided over by the Revd Monahan, who made special referencs in his remarks to the faithful services rendered by the pastors in charge of the Cure, prior to bis coming, mentioning Revd Chambers now in Lyttelton, Revds Hamilton, Gillum, Feudal!, NewtoD, Rice and others.
Mr J, Grimmond, who was a parishioner at the inception of tha Church, outlined tbeir early efforts to provide a place of worship,’ stating £7OO was given or promised at tie initial meeting in October 1866, the Revd Archdeacon H rpsr who is still alive, being the vicar, asi-ted by the late Vcn Archdeacon Beaumont as curate, they having the cure of some 30,000 ecul?, most of whom were meles. The present building ■was opened for public worship on January 25rh 1867, there being only about half-a-dozan females present. The Church was filled with men to the very doors. Mr Grimmond read some interesting extracts horn Archdeacon's Harper’s book of his labours amongst the diggers in the early days and concluded his remarks by counselling the juveniles present to follow the example set by their fathers and mothers in attending public worship.
Mr H. M. Linatrom spoke on the work of the Sunday School in connection with the Church, having been associated with So Pam’s pariah for some 34 years when Rimu formed portion of the same, and ha gave an interesting outline of the establishment of the Sunday School in Ro;s daring the Rev Feadall-’s incumbency, eulogising that gentleman’s good woik for a great number of years in Ross and district.
After the speeches were concluded the gathering assumed the form of a church social. SoDgs were given by Mesdames Monaghan, Grimmond. Mr Hills and others and a recitation by Miss Djris CLmers. Two items of SDecial interest were a Maori war cry by the Boy Scouts and a dainty supper provided by ths lady members of the church, Round games and juvenile dances were indulged in and the singing of the National Anthem closed a very happy and eujoyabie funciion.
