The Grey Rifle Club proposes sending down a team to fire a match with the Kanieri Rifle Club to-morrow. The Minister of Public Works, who is visiting Karamea district this weeek, returns to Wellington before paying the promised visit to Westland.
The Westland Caledonian Society celebrated the Burns' Anniver.'ary at the Druid’s Hall last night, when there was a large and representative attendance, and a jovial gathering carried through in a very hearty spirit. The Westland Trotting Club has adopted a programme of seven events, with stakes £450, for the annual trotting meeting on the Hokitika racecourse on Thursday, April 12th. The stakes have bom inoreased by £SO on last year's jfd gramme. The principal event is worth 1 80VS.
jK War Certificate Savings Club has been started in Otorohanga, with the threefold object of promoting ind'vidual thrift, stimulating tbe sale of war certificates, and helping the Empire. Sixteen residents subscribe 1/ a week, and a war certificate is bought weekly. A ballot determines the order of ownership of certificates bought. The system has been immensely successful in Britain.
Mr Wyveru Wilsod, S.M. and Warden, Westport, is to be transferred to South Canterbury, with headquarters at Timaru, and to act as assistant Magistrate at Christchurch. Mr HutchisoD, of Graymouth, will take tbe Westport Courts, and Nelson will be worked by the Blenheim Magistrate. These arrangements, are, presumably, temporary, while other magistrates are engaged on Military Service Board dnty.
The local body elcetio.is fall to be held this year. These include the Mayoral, Borough Council elections in April, and the County Council elections in N ovember. Contemporaneous with these in the respective districts will be, also, the election of representatives to the Charitable Aid Board. Harbor Board, etc. The municipal rolls are now in process of compilation, There will not be any general election for the House of Representatives this year, as the term of sitting members has been extended for one year by special act of Parliament.
It is reported that a number of murders have been taking place recently in Fi]i (states tbe Auckland -‘Star”), the chief cause of the trouble being jealousy. The weapon used is the cane knife. Not long ago a native reported a murder at Nadi, and the police on investigating discovered a few bones, on which was a little flesh. Four Indians were arrested ag a result of the murder. On NewYear’s Day a double murder occurred near Labasa, on the island of Vanua Lovu. An Indian woman and a young son were seriously wounded, both dying from loss of blood. An Indian confessed Ms guilt, and was surprised to be charged with murder.
Sir George Williams, the founder of the Y.M.C.A., was a Somerset man, born at Dulvorton, and m recognition of the fact a number of leading men in that country have organised a memorial to his memory for erection in the Shire Hall, Taunton. A commission was given to Sir George Frampton, R,A , to prepare a bust for the purpose, and this will be unveiled on the 16th October by the Lord Lieutenant of the county (the Marquis of Bath).
