Sir William Irvine, - in opposing an alliance of the parties and supporting a truly representative national Government, voiced the growing impression that if conscription, as an issue, were submitted at a general election the result would be different. PERTH, Jan. 25.

AUCKLAND, Jan. 25. James Ridling, who had reserved Ins defence, was committed for trial a» Pukekohe to-day on a charge of burglary ou January 12th. Mrs Leach deposed that she retired about 11 p.m., and later heard six loud knocks oil the front door. Then the kitchen window was smashed and a man entered her bedroom. Ho sat on the floor and slid towards her. She jumped out of bed and caught up a knife. The man sprang at her and caught her hands.
