OBITUARY

Mr C. R. Glass, for many years a well-known settler of the Kckatahi district, passed away at his son’s residence, Revell Street, at 6.30 o’clock this morning, after a short illness. The late Mr Glass was one of the early pioneers of this district, and was a man who took always a very active interest in tbe affairs of the place. Ha was a more active man than his ags would indicate, and his activities were well maintained to the last. The late Mr Glass was born in the year 1841 in Midlothian, Scotland. When nine years of ago he moved with his father to Kincaidiushire where his parents settled on a leasehold. Ac the age of 19 Mr Glass WbHt off to New Brunswick, but after a short time returned to the Old Country. The spirit of travel was upon him and later he set out for Australia, going first to Queensland and aftewards to New Sqrrth Wahs. Then came the gold rushes to New Zealand and at the end of 1865 Mr Glass croaeed from Australia to New Zealand in a little schooner which took six weeks to accomplish tbe voyage. He larded at Hokitika and in common with the rcet of the early pioneers tried his fortunes at gold mining. He wa3 one of the first on the field when Stafford town was rushed. Later Mr Glass took up farmiog in the Kokatahi district, but sold out aud moved to Oaraarn, in which district he was engaged at dairy farming. He returned again to Kokatahi, and there with his wire and family settled down, holding different areas, and being a prominent member of tbo community. For years he was connected with the Westland A. & P. Association, holding the office of President for different terms, and daring his regime several successful shows were held. Ha also represented the Association at Dominion Conferences, having boen intimately associated with the organisation from its inception. Mr Glass was also a prominent, member of the Kokatahi School Committee, and has held a commission as Justice of the Peace since 1892* In recent years ha retired from farming, and came to live in town, and only last year took a seat on the Hokitika Harbor Board as one of the . Westland County representative?. The wife of the late Mr Glass only predeceased her husband a few months ago. A family of three sons aud three daughters are left to mourn a lovieg parent. Two of the sons served in the Boar War, one with the Fifth and one with the Eighth New Zealand Contingent. Another son ia now on active service at the ironr. A wide circle of friends will have every sympathy with the bereaved family.
