MR WILSON’S CHATTER.
London Comment. (Received Jan 24, at 10,10 a.m.) London, Jan 23 The Newspapers generally pay a tribute to President Wilson’s high xnindedness and lofty idealism. Tne State address deserves respectful consideration. Criticism i* chiefly directed against the phrases on “ peaca without victory ” and “ the freedom of tbe seas.” The Daily Chronicle considers it is difficult to harmonise Mr Wilson’b imposing programme with realities. A world concert is impossible without th 9 good faith of Germany. The present statesmen are untrustworthy. The freedom of the seas is desirable in peace time, or as part of the world concert in securing peace, but not if land powers are free to use military weapcns. The Allies must have a 1 victory for the luture security. The Morning Post states the freedom, honour and security of higher ideals than peace permanent paßc9 are only obtainable by -debating Germany!. If Mr Wils.-n wants peace .• securing liberty, he should help' the Allies to terminate the war otherwise let tbe Allies secure it in the only possible way by defeating the enera'es. Other j min ds emphasise the Allies’ determinaPou to prevent a drawn war. Militarism must be defeated. Thera is some criticism of.- Mr Wilson's aloofness from the wn’s realities. More Sinkings. London, Jan 23 The 'Swedish steamer Kamma, (1516) aDd three smaller vessels were sunk. The British steamer Biron Sampthill (1807), the Norwegian, Wotuufjell (2392) are believed to be sunk. The Greatest Tragedy of All. [REUTER’S SERVICE. —COPYRIGHT.] London, Jan 23 Presiding at tbe annual conference of the Labour Party at Manchester. Mr Wardle, M.P., declared there could be only one greater tragedy than the war, namely if Britain had not joined .in.
