The extraordinary behaviour of a m«n occupying the dock in the Wellington Magistrate’s _ Court on Tuesday morning led to his being remanded ler a week for medical observation. Ho made no comment when the charges against him were read, and.he entered no plea. Instead, ho solemnly [.’seed the thumb of his right liand against the point of his nose, and extending his fingers included the whole Court in an unhurried salute. He repeated the process shortly, in the most unperturbed manner, and was then escorted by the police to the prisoners’ room.
After inquiring into a complaint that the wife of a railway employee at Paekakariki was competing with a local dairyman in supplying milk to various customers, the Hon. W. IT. Hern’s has written as follows to the.complainants:—“lt appears abundantly evident that a considerable number of the residents in Paekakarika are not in sympathy with the attempt that is being made to curtail the liberty of Mrs Foley by implying that her husband is noglecting his duties as a railwayman and competing in railway time with outsiders. I have already made it clear in another similar case that the Railway Department cannot interfere in the domestic arrangements of its employees, and so .long as railwayman devote themselves to their duties in rail w:iy time there is no reason why they should not supplement their earnings in their own time. as- in this instance, the wife and family of a man in the lower ranks of the service have the energy and ability to assist the breadwinner, I am of opinion that they should he left to do so, even if not encouraged.”
