B * \PER BEEPS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT]. Wanganui, Jan 21 j A case of some interest to employers and apprentices was heard in the Magistrate’s Court when the Inspector ( of Awards proceeded against Paul | Chapman for a breach of the Eugi- ( neers’ Award, It was alleged that the defendant had beea apprenticed to Allen Brothers as a titter, and that he had left their service before the i time of his apprenticeship had ex- ] pired. 1 For the defence it was contended the agreement of service was merely a verbal one, and that an apprenticeship must be evidenced by a written deod, counsel therefore held that the defendant had commuted nobreich of the g award,
The Inspector said if this contention were' upheld it would affeot nearly every apprentice in the Dominion. He would therefore ask His Worship to state a case for the Arbitration Court. The defendant raised a farther defence that he had left his employment with the -auction of one of the partner.* of the firm. fcurther heariug of the case was adjourned to enable the inspector to bring evidence to Duet tho points raised,
The White Scourge. Wanganui, Jan 21 The treatment of consumptives in separate sanatoria than in buildings attached to the hospitals in the D> minion formed the basis ot a letter written by the Minister of Public Health to the Wanganui Hospital Board. The Minister agreed that for cases that were likely to benefit by sanatorium treatment special institutions are necessary, apart from hospitals, but points out that there are two classes of consumptives for whom accommodation ia required in connection with general hospitals —a case of consumption awaiting admission to a sanatorium and a case of consumption that would not be likely to benefit by treatment in a sanatorium.
“It is especially with regcrcTto the accommodation of the above-mentioned classes of consumptive cises that the Department has advised boards to erect annexes in connection with the hospitals of the Dominion,” said the Minister, and 1 trust that your board will lose do time in providing such accommodation. I may say that no danger is likely to accrue to other patients from the treatment of consumptive patients in special annexes, and it can confidently be said that though this practice of accommodating consumptives in connection with our general hospitals has been fallowed oat for some year?, there has been no suggestion to the effect that inaction has beea catried by this means.”
